Welcome to the CSE Vlab.

The CSE Vlab is a small pool of Windows XP PC’s configured for Remote Desktop connections.  CSE Students may access these machines to complete selected lab assignments from off campus.

Connecting from an on campus station:

Open a  web browser and connect to the Vlab Status Page link at the bottom of this page.  Locate an available machine on the Vlab Status Page and open a Remote Desktop connection to the machine.  Login using your CSE1 account credentials.

Connecting from an off campus station:

Connecting from off campus is a two step process.  First you must set up an authenticated secure session between your home computer and the SPSU campus network using "connect.spsu.edu".   After doing this, you may open a browser and connect to the Vlab Status Page link at the bottom of this page.  Locate an available machine on the Vlab Status Page and open a Remote Desktop connection to the machine.

If you are connecting from off campus, please review the material behind the tutorial link below before using the Vlab for the first time.  Tutorial examples are from Windows XP, but the procedures for Vista are similar.  Mac and Linux users who configure their computers for RDP client may also be also be able to use the Vlab, but we do not provide support for those operating systems at this time.   A summary of other important information covered in the tutorial is below:

-User sessions limited to two hours and automatically terminated at that point.  A notice will display 2 minutes before a session is terminated to give you time to save your work.

-RDP sessions which are idle for more than 15 minutes are terminated.  A notice will display 2 minutes before the session is ended.

-Vlab computers refresh themselves when  user sessions terminate and erase all data files created by users.   Thus, you  must save data files created during your vlab session to a Home Folder on a CSE Lab server in order to have access to them after your session ends.  Do not save data files to the local drive of a Vlab computer as they will be automatically erased when your session ends.   We recommend you save your work to the lab server frequently during Vlab work sessions to guard against data loss that can occur if your session is terminated due to unexpected network conditions.

-Your internet connection should have minimum bandwidth of 300/1000 mb (up/down).

If you have difficulty making a connection to a lab machine, please contact us at cselab@spsu.edu and we will do our best to help.  Requests for assistance with use of applications software should be directed to your instructor. .
